Car insurance excess?

flicker_y2k asked:

Hi,

I’ve just got a quote for my car to be repaired since it was damaged a couple of months ago. The third party was at fault (you’ll have to give me the benefit of the doubt, I won’t bore you with the details here!) and so I am sending the estimate for cost of repairs to the assistance company.

They have asked me to detail all financial losses I wish to recover. Shall I put my excess of £250 here? We don’t have admission of liability from the third party (that I know of). And I’m not entirely sure if I should put the excess on the letter too. If we get liability, will the insurance company try and recover it from the third party without me paying at all? Or will I have to pay and try and claim it back myself? And in either case, do I put it on this letter? Or should I wait until the liability issue’s clearer?

I’m going to take it up with my father in law as soon as possible (he’s an insurance agent who interviews people about accidents) but I’d really like to get this letter sent today. So if any of you are in the business and know what’s best, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Yes put everything down as insurers will usually try to get the uninsured losses, like the excess, back for you.

is the excess of $250 your insurance deductible? did your own insurance company handle and told you that you will pay your $250 deductible when you get repairs?

if so and your insurance handles, they will subrogate (go after the at fault party for their payment and your $250 deductible)

did you have injuries? did you use a rental car since your car was undrivable?

i question the length of time; usually damages and quotes are taken w/in a week, not couple of months. if it has been this long, i suspect that they are not accepting liability or disputing it.

I think you will be expected to pay the £250 before the work starts. This will be recovered by your insurance co on your behalf if this arrangement was intialised at the start of the policy. If not, you will have to recover it yourself. Insurance companys usually make a charge for this service at the start of the policy
