Do you always need to fill in a claim form after a car accident to make a claim?

gunion asked:

I was hit by a Lorry the week before last and spoke to my insurance company shortly after and am now awaiting liability to be accepted.

whilst speaking to my friend, i was told that i should have filled out a claim form immediately after the smash, without it my claim would not be able to be processed.

Should this have been sent to me by now by my insurance company? it has been nearly 2 weeks.

If you called the insurance company the rep probably took care of the paperwork. You should call to be sure.

If you phoned your insurer to report the accident, they should post it to you if they require a claim form.

You should inform your insurance after an accident as a matter of course, some companies will take the details over the phone others will send a form.

You should inform you broker or you company by email so that there is a record of you informing them, do not weait for the company to accept liability tell them he hit you not the other way around.

I hope it was not a foreign lorry as you stand as much chamce as a snow ball in hell getting anything from foreign insurers.

A friend of mine had his jaguar written of by a foreign registired lorry reversing in to it, in a supermarket car park.
Luckily one of the warehouse staff saw it and and gave the details, the foreign company did not want to know.

He got in touch with the guy who gave him the information and he was told that that truck comes regualry and was due on the 5th of the next month. He went to court and got a bailiffs siezure order and took out a civil court order against the driver. The lorry arrived unloaded it was the same driver and truck and with Police assisitance the driver was held and the truck taken in to court custody. His Jaguar was worth
£35,000 the bailffi seized the truck and it the company offered £ 5,000, it was refused two weeks later the company pais him £ 40,000 pounds and he would release the truck , which he duly did . the police then arrested the driver and impoun ded the truck for an accident in the midlands in which a woman died.

Phone up your insurance company and ask them about this, whether they sent off a claim form to you

At some stage you will probably have to put your signature on something to verify that the claim is genuine. If it’s a simple case and the other party cooperates with the claim you may not have to do a formal report
