He needs workmans comp for that.
Now you are opening a can of worms you might not like…
Most states require you to be a licensed business to obtain insurance for a job….Plus you may be required to have a permit issued by your local inspections dept…Most states allow you to work on your own house…But if someone else does it they must be a licensed contractor in order to pull a permit…Beware if you have to pull a permit then you will be required to have and inspection prior to the inspector signing off…But the liability insurance doesn’t cover him getting hurt just your property if he screws up…Workman’s comp covers when you get hurt and unfortunately you can not comp yourself….just like you cant have unemployment insurance on yourself………..cant lay yourself off……. Good luck but you are in a catch 22 situation…
You should never allow a contractor to touch your property
without evidence of proper insurance. That policy should
provide a minimum of $1,000,000 of liability coverage. They
should also have their own workers compensation, which varies from state to state. Some states require workers
compensation on your homeowners policy for the handyman/ incidential worker. Check your policy.
They might be able to get bonded and insured that way ..
I am sure he is a nice guy, but I would not let him replace my roof. Hire someone with experience and proper insurance.
Also, by hiring him to replace your roof your are basically taking on him as an employee. It is called owner-contracting. Stay away from this at all costs.
