hiya,
hiya,
well im hoping to run a small dance class for children aged 8-12.
im just going to hire a pub room, once a week and teach the kids a dance rountine over a few weeks and put a parentla show on at the end.
my questions are…
would i need any type of insurance?
could i make each parent sign a form saing i accept no liabilty?
would i need any other legal documentation or could i just go ahead and do it?
thanks so much xxxx
i have had previous police checks done as i worked within a primary school, would i have to have them re-done?

If you’re working with children then you should have a police check done. You can’t sign away all liability – it’s impossible not to be liable for death or serious injury so even if you do make parents sign forms it is quite risky to not get insurance just in case something really bad happens but it’s up to you if you want to take the risk really.
Officially the decision about whether you can reuse an old police check is up to the company you’re working for so as it’s your own business I guess it’s up to you. I doubt any of the parents will demand a new one so that should be fine.
If this is a new business venture then you would be better getting a new CRB check done specificly for this business.
For running training of this type you really should be covered by public liability insurance. It can be around £90 per year, but would save you a massive amount if a child were to be injured while in your care and you ended up getting sued.
If you are in the Merseyside or Cheshire areas then Train 2000 can offer you free business advice and support on issues like this. Check out the website or facebook group in ‘sources’ for more info. Or email or call 0151 236 6601
If you aren’t in those areas then go on the Business Link website as they will be able to direct you to similar support in your area.
If you are running a business then you will need liability insurance.
The pub would require you to have this anyway or they potentially could be liable. Doubtful you would be able to do this in a pub room anyway.
No parent I know would sign a no liability document. I certainly wouldn’t.
You will need to check with your local council as to some of the legalities of working with children.
You will need to register with HMRC
Council will insist you get CRB checked
Parents (if they have any sense) would insist on CRB check.
I don’t think you have though this through very well.
