Organising a charity halloween party, do i need insurance for catering, or can i cater from home?

dollyminxture asked:

My friend has organised a charity halloween party to be held at a large pub, she has asked her friends (me included) to make food to cater for a party size of over 100 including all types of people. she has also used our company to promote it. I am not sure if we need public liability insurance to produce the catering as none of us have any qualifications and if any of the guests get food poisoning they may try and sue us.
Does anyone know if there are any rules or regulations on this?

I have tried looking on the FSA but i havent found anything with relevance.

all answers appreciated

You don’t say where you are located so I suggest you phone your local council for guidance
Usually food consumed on a premises has to be made and prepared on that premises, and that at least one member of staff should have the current REHIS food hygiene qualification.
Your local council should be able to guide you on this and off course so should the pub where you are holding the function

My advice – get insurance against any possible liability, legal or otherwise. Because if you do not and someone claims they got ill becuase of the home-made food, you could face a lawsuit which will cost thousands.

    What is public liability?

Public liability insurance covers any damage or accidental injury to a third party or their property caused by you or your employees or your business. It also covers any related costs and expenses such as legal fees, as well as hospital treatment costs (including ambulance charges) that the NHS may claim from you.

Now check out these Google Search links too. . .

    Don’t take risks, get insured.

    Worth it.

Also, if ever you plan an outdoor event, such as a BBQ in the summer in your garden or anywhere, you can get insurance against it raining off the event. Always remember that.

hi,if its for charity then as far as i am aware u will not need public liability because u are not charging the customers, public liability can sometimes be veru expensive so it woudnt make sense to get it.if they are ill they will have to prove that your food caused it.its only if sell yuor food you need insurance.my advice would be to use fresh ingredients, keep hair tied back and clean prep surfaces veru well between different types of food as to not cause cross contamination,im not a expert on this but have had catering business in the past, good luck

Insurance is a MUST on such an occasion. 3rd party liability does not cost much and offers the calm of mind!

What you need is called events insurance.

Liability insurance the pub owner may be willing to add this occasion to his current policy. More important is a Board of Health Inspection of your cooking facilities, oven temperatures, cleanliness and so on.
You could be opening yourself up for law suits, fines and actually being shut down the night of the party. In the USA I could call the Dept of Health and they would answer all the questions and provide a list of what is needed. Suggest you do the same.
