someone smashed into my car and is vague about insurance company- what would you do?

needtoknowjo asked:

when he hears it is £1800 worth of damage I dont think he is going to want to pay. He tried to get me to go to a garage miles away where he knows someone that can probably bodge it and I said no. He was vague about his main line phone, I have his reg number but no witnesses. He admitted liability fingers crossed he is insured if he does not want to pay that sort of money – what do you reckon?

Hopefully you reported the accident to the police…. they should have the information and your insurance company can make his pay.

Gather all his info. and file a police report.

    Bit tricky.

He might be insured and just doesnlt want to claim his insurance and sees it as better to just pay the money and get his mate to fix it (Which 9 times out of 10 would be a good repair).

If he is not insured you probabky have to involve police. If he is unisured you have to wact hwhat you are doing and donlt get left with you to foot the bill.

Sorry best I cna do on little infromation.

    Hope it goes okay.

Report it to the police, and report it to your insurance company. If he was insured he wouldn’t be asking you to go to some garage, and he wouldn’t be too worried about payment.

If he has not given you all the full details required to give to your insurance company, I suggest having a word at the police station.
They will be able to check if he is the owner of the vehicle or if it’s stolen.
Stick to your guns about the repair in an authorised garage, preferably via your insurance company. You don’t say how badly damaged the car is, but it’s better to be safe than sorry afterwards.
    Hope you get things sorted.

If this has just happened, then you should report the matter to the police. You are expected to report accidents immediately, so I hope this is the case. The police can then issue a summons against him for driving without insurance. The only way in which he can defend himself is by producing his insurance policy, in which case you are entitled to particulars of his insurers. Act immediately.

you should never take any ones word for it that they are insured. allways call the police. and never leave or let the outher driver leave untill the police arrive. if you dont do that then legaly you havnt realy got a leg to stand on without witnesses.

Report the matter to the Police and they will check he has all the required paperwork to drive his car.

You do not have to go through an insurance company but I would suggest that you do, as if he is not insured your going to have to take him to court to recover your costs if he wont pay up.

You do not have to take it to his garage, it should be either your own normal garage or one chosen by your insurer.

He has to supply you with his details within 24 hours.
